Etawah (Uttar Pradesh), Nov 29 (ANI): At least 654 turtles were recovered from a pond in Bharthana town of Uttar Pradesh's Etawah on November 28. Based on a tip-off, Forest department raided the area and recovered the turtles. Smugglers flee away from the spot. 482 turtles out of the total were found to be dead and the rest 172 were severely sick. The turtles were of Lissemys punctata species or the Indian flapshell turtle. Forest officials informed that these turtles are smuggled for consumption purposes as well as for making medicines to enhance sexual energy. The officials also added that it is a myth that the medicines made from turtles increase sexual power. These turtles are a protected species under The Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
